In the past, French houses were ‘warmed’ by heating up a cooking pot up over the hearth. According to tradition, this could only be done once all work to the new house was completed; at this stage the owners would invite their nearest and dearest and all those who had helped with the work to come and share their first meal with them. Of this tradition not much has survived.
Although a move is still celebrated by a gathering of friends and family, the cooking pot no longer has a part to play in the proceedings, replaced by many different gifts. Guests invited to a housewarming nowadays bring items that are as yet missing from the home sweet home. This original, practical and/or decorative item is never easy to find, especially when you’ve no idea of how the house has been decorated, in terms of style or colour scheme…
